When Laz, a young wombat, goes from playing a game with his friend Kita in their idyllic tribal village to witnessing the nightmare of a Tasmanian devil attack, he reacts in the only way he can: he fights back. He accidentally kills a devil while trying to save his sister, but his sister is still taken captive. To make matters worse, the tribal elders banish Laz, Kita and Zeeg—the three youths who fought back—for failing to follow the way of the wombat.

Frustrated and adrift, the three friends embark on a quest through red rocky deserts and deep eucalyptus jungles to discover their own way. With a cheerful koala warrior as a guide and a wise platypus as their trainer, they hope to survive long enough to find a legendary weapon that could save their tribe and Laz’s sister from the devils. But danger lurks around every tree…

In THE WAY OF THE WOMBAT, the ancestors created the world using six different Ways, which the creatures in the story now live and fight by. Here they are:

Earth: Earth is stable and peaceful at first glance, but will erupt with extreme power when pressed. Fight like Earth, and you are mighty and immovable, standing strong while facing an opponent head-on and favoring slower, unstoppable weapons. (Color: Orange.)


Water: Water becomes what it needs to be, shaped by the pressures around it. It can be calm or ferocious, slow-moving or swift, but always for a reason. Fight like Water, and you smooth and flowing, with attacks that seem to come from everywhere at once. (Color: Blue.)


Fire: Fire is wild, hard to contain. Without guidance it can consume indiscriminately. But it is not evil; it simply is. Fight like Fire and you are fast and ferocious, unrelenting and overwhelming, favoring smaller, lighter weapons for speed. (Color: Red.)


Wood: Wood is tall, solid and unconquerable as a fortress, providing those around it with shelter. Fight like Wood and you are defensive and distant, highly effective at blocking and finding weakness in your opponent, and you favor shields. (Color: Green.)


Wind: Air is light and intangible. It can seem harmless on a sunny day, until it decides to bombard the land with hail and lightning. Fight like Wind, and you are nimble and difficult to hit, favoring projectile weapons or, for closer combat, light jabs that are here and then gone before an opponent knows what hit them. (Color: White.)


Shadow: Shadow is cool, dark and secretive, a powerful weapon for those who know how to use it and a deadly trap for those who don’t. Fight like Shadow and you use clever and calculated motions to divert attention, followed by a strike the opponent never saw coming. Tricks are your tools, along with a strong weapon that can eliminate an opponent in one hit. (Color: Black.)
